Italian educators and politicians protest proposed budget cuts to public services

The Gilda Unams federation has announced a national mobilization scheduled for November 6 to protest the proposed 2027 Budget Bill. Vito Carlo Castellana, the federation's national coordinator, criticized the draft legislation for including nearly 7,000 cuts to public school positions. He argued that while the government claims to value educators, the budget prioritizes military spending over education and fails to address the need for smaller class sizes.

In the Lazio region, Democratic Party councilor Eleonora Mattia has introduced a motion urging regional President Rocca to lobby the Meloni government for increased funding. The motion calls for structural investments in public healthcare and state schools to combat teacher shortages, reduce medical waiting lists, and prevent the privatization of essential services. Critics argue the current budget trajectory threatens the social welfare state by favoring rearmament and capital flight over public education and health.
