Italian entrepreneur driven to suicide after Ndrangheta-style extortion

In Guidonia Montecelio, Italy, 54‑year‑old businessman M. M. was found dead inside a small Smart car on 28 January 2023. Investigations revealed he had been subjected to a violent extortion racket led by Samuele Melara, Francesco Protani and Francesco Primerano. What began as a legitimate fishing‑industry debt of about €147,000 was inflated to €600,000 and then threatened to reach €1 million. The trio threatened the victim with an axe and a pistol, claimed ties to the Morabito branch of the Ndrangheta and forced him to sign a false debt‑recognition document. Overwhelmed by the intimidation, M. M. took his own life. In March 2024, a Rome court sentenced the three perpetrators to eight years in prison, finding them guilty of converting a commercial dispute into a lethal intimidation campaign.
