Italian environmental groups challenge park authority decisions in Calabria and Lazio

The Regional Marine Parks Authority of Calabria says it never authorized the construction of a metal fence and private‑property sign in the protected Oasi Scolacium, prompting the 5 Star Movement to demand a police investigation and a restoration of the area. Codacons Calabria filed a complaint with local officials, the prosecutor and the Carabinieri alleging the illegal works.

In the Lazio region, the Ecoistituto Reseda clarified that the Regional Park of the Castelli Romani did not grant a full permit for doubling the water extraction from the Sforza Cesarini well at Lake Albano. The park imposed conditions limiting the project to pipe replacement and emergency use only, rejecting the municipalities’ request for increased capture. Environmental groups continue to call for the cessation of water withdrawal from the lake and a reduction in municipal water consumption.
