Italian experts link diet to cancer prevention and lower dementia risk
Dr. Lucia Sabato, a nutrition biologist at IRCCS CROB in Rionero in Vulture, explains that a balanced Mediterranean diet—rich in whole grains, high‑quality animal and plant proteins, fruits, vegetables and the so‑called “five colours of wellness”—helps lower chronic inflammation and supports cellular health, thereby reducing the likelihood of oncological diseases.
Research presented by Italian health officials also stresses that controlling cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and sedentary habits can significantly cut the incidence of dementia. Early intervention on these modifiable factors, combined with a nutritious diet, is advocated as a public‑health strategy to protect brain function and reduce neurodegenerative disease risk.
