Italian farmers seek protections amid rising wildlife conflicts
Agricultural producers in Italy are calling for increased protections following rising conflicts between wildlife and farming operations. Recent incidents, including a wolf attack on a woman in Maremma, have highlighted the increasing proximity of wild animals to crops and livestock.
Farmers report that severe drought and climate changes are driving wildlife toward human settlements in search of food and water. In the Pomarance area, producers have noted significant losses, with damage to grapes reaching 20% and losses to cereals and legumes hitting 50% due to animals such as deer, foxes, and wolves. Agricultural representatives, including Cia Etruria, have expressed concern that these losses are compromising entire vineyards and require institutional recognition and support.
