Italian financial institutions invest in SpaceX and space economy
Major Italian financial institutions are increasing their involvement in the expanding space economy. Intesa Sanpaolo has reportedly acquired a stake in SpaceX, driven by the company's advancements in orbital launches, satellite infrastructure, and artificial intelligence. While the specific size of the holding remains undisclosed, the move signals interest in the cutting-edge technological vision of Elon Musk.
Unipol has also established links to Musk's ecosystem through a prior $100 million investment in the acquisition of Twitter. Although Unipol CEO Matteo Laterza described the investment as "non-strategic" due to its high volatility, the group realized a gross capital gain of approximately €211 million as of June 30.
The broader space economy is projected to grow significantly, with global market estimates reaching $626.4 billion in 2025 and potentially exceeding $1 trillion by 2034. Industry experts at OHB Italia note that growth is being driven by downstream applications, where satellite data is integrated into sectors such as telecommunications, logistics, agriculture, and cybersecurity.
