Italian fishing sector faces crisis over fuel costs and infrastructure

Italian fishing unions, including FAI, FLAI, and UILA, have met with Undersecretary Patrizio La Pietra to express grave concern regarding the crisis facing the maritime sector. The unions highlighted that rising diesel costs are exacerbating a long-standing structural crisis characterized by increased production costs, shrinking fishing activities, and declining business revenues, which has led to a dramatic loss of employment.

While acknowledging government measures such as tax credits, the unions emphasized that these supports must directly benefit workers, given the sector's unique pay-per-catch system. They are calling for greater protections for those on board who face reduced income and fewer fishing days.

In Livorno, the political party Lega has also intervened to support fishermen at Darsena Vecchia. They claim that recent waterfront redevelopment has failed to improve operational conditions, instead creating difficulties such as inadequate spaces for selling catch, exposure to sunlight, and a lack of parking for customers. Lega is calling for a formal dialogue between the Municipality of Livorno, the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority, and fishing representatives to address these infrastructure and economic concerns.
