Italian folklore and traditions in Puglia and Salento
The southern Italian regions of Puglia and Salento maintain deep-rooted cultural traditions, including the ancient 'pizzica' dance. Historically, 'pizzica' served as a ritualistic remedy for tarantula bites, where the dance was believed to induce a trance state to cure the victim. While often characterized as a courtship dance, its origins are tied to these folk healing practices.
The region is also home to 'masserie', traditional rural estates established between the 16th and 19th centuries that once functioned as self-sufficient communities. Additionally, Salento contains significant agricultural heritage, including monumental olive groves. Some trees in these groves date back to the Roman era, with historical records from the 1st century AD confirming the existence of large-scale olive cultivation in the area north of Brindisi.
