Italian food authorities suspend multiple businesses over hygiene violations

Italian health authorities and the Carabinieri NAS have conducted a series of inspections across several regions, resulting in multiple business suspensions due to severe hygiene and safety violations.

In Catania, a bar-pasticceria had its production laboratory immediately suspended following the discovery of widespread cockroach infestations near food preparation surfaces and equipment, alongside poor maintenance and cleaning. The facility must undergo complete sanitization and pest eradication before reopening.

In the Salerno and Avellino provinces, authorities targeted bakery and dairy operations. A dairy plant in Piana del Sele was closed due to the presence of flying and crawling insects in processing areas and storage cells, leading to the destruction of high-risk dairy products. In Avellino, a bakery was suspended for poor hygiene, structural deficiencies, and the employment of undocumented workers. Additionally, authorities seized frozen goods lacking HACCP controls and bakery products without traceability. Other bakeries in Cilento and Valle Metelliana received formal warnings to rectify sanitary issues.

The total value of the closed structures is estimated at approximately 650,000 euros, with administrative fines and penalties totaling tens of thousands of euros.
