Italian football faces refereeing controversy following Serie A matches
Controversial refereeing decisions have sparked debate following recent Serie A fixtures involving Atalanta, Frosinone, Lazio, and Parma.
In the match between Atalanta and Frosinone, which ended in a 4-4 draw, experts Luca Marelli and Mauro Bergonzi criticized a penalty awarded to Atalanta for a handball by Giorgio Cittadini. Marelli argued the movement was a natural attempt to regain balance rather than an intentional effort to increase body volume, noting the player was not looking at the opponent. This marks the fifth officiating error involving Frosinone in just eight matchdays.
Separately, in the Lazio-Parma match, former referee Gianpaolo Calvarese commented on a disputed incident involving Frattesi. While Calvarese suggested the contact in the area could have been deemed a penalty in live play, he agreed with the decision not to intervene via VAR, noting the referee's perspective and the current officiating trend of prioritizing field truth over minor contact.
