Giovanni Malagò faces FIGC commissioner threat over election dispute
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) faces a potential governance crisis following revelations regarding Giovanni Malagò’s election as president. The controversy centers on Malagò’s failure to be properly registered as a member of the FIGC at the time of his candidacy, a requirement stipulated by both FIGC statutes and CONI principles.
CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio has indicated that the election may need to be voided based on findings from Sports Attorney General Ugo Taucer. This has led to serious discussions regarding the possible appointment of a special commissioner to oversee the federation. One proposed scenario involves Malagò himself serving as the commissioner to manage the transition until new elections can be held.
While the legal battle continues, the potential for a takeover by a commissioner raises questions about the stability of current FIGC appointments, including national team coach Roberto Mancini and technical director Claudio Ranieri. Malagò has addressed the situation, describing the criticism as ‘attacks from friendly fire’ and expressing confidence as he prepares to face the legal and institutional challenges ahead.
