Italian football history: Milestones for AS Roma and Napoli
Historical milestones in Italian football are marked by significant anniversaries for AS Roma and SSC Napoli.
On October 17, 1998, Francesco Totti scored his first goal as captain for AS Roma. During a Serie A match against Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico, Totti secured a 2-1 victory with a decisive goal in the 94th minute. This match followed an equalizer by Alenitchev and a previous goal by Batistuta. Totti had inherited the captaincy from Aldair, who recognized his leadership qualities.
In a separate historical event occurring on October 17, 1926, SSC Napoli recorded its first-ever goal in a league championship. Paulo Innocenti, an Italo-Brazilian defender, scored the goal in the 23rd minute during a match against Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris stadium. Although Napoli lost the match 4-1, the goal marked the beginning of the club's scoring history in Serie A.
