Italian gambling sector logs €2.5 bn in basketball bets and €1.6 bn in Basilicata turnover

In 2024 Italian sports betting collected more than €25 bn, with basketball accounting for roughly 10 % of that total, or about €2.5 bn in wagers. The sport still trails football but has expanded, as games fill arenas, appear on TV and attract live‑betting platforms.

The Basilicata region recorded over €1.6 bn of gambling activity in 2025, driven by more than 55 % of bets placed online via smartphones. The province of Potenza contributed about €1.02 bn, while Matera added €594 m. Digital operators such as Sportaza dominate the market, offering instant access to live odds and electronic payments. Across the Atlantic, the United States generated €121.1 bn in basketball betting in 2023, underscoring the sport’s far larger scale abroad.
