Italian gardeners use spring lawn regeneration and fabric mulch

Gardeners in Italy are preparing lawns for the growing season by first aerating compacted soil and removing winter‑dead thatch. Experts recommend mechanical aeration or a fork in March‑April, followed by scarification to eliminate the organic layer that blocks air and water. The loosened soil then receives seed and nutrients for a healthy green cover.

A complementary tip is to lay a sturdy fabric tarp before pruning or planting. The tarp, originally used by painters, collects cut branches, leaves, soil and other debris, making clean‑up quick and reducing plastic waste. Choosing a reusable cotton or heavy‑duty canvas version complies with the European EN 17033 standard for biodegradable mulching films, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to thin plastic sheets.
