Italy general practitioners strike over healthcare reform
General practitioners in Italy have launched a two-day national strike on September 15 and 16, 2026, organized by the Sindacato Medici Italiani (SMI). The mobilization is a protest against the June 23, 2026, agreement regarding the 'Case della Comunità' (Community Houses).
Key grievances include the mandatory requirement for doctors to provide up to six hours of service per week within these new structures, which the union describes as an unfair 'hourly debt.' The SMI also opposes the 'Ruolo Unico' (Single Role) model and is calling for several reforms, such as the establishment of a university specialization school in General Medicine, the introduction of a 'double channel' for voluntary employment, and increased staffing for the 118 emergency services.
While the strike may cause disruptions to outpatient visits and medical offices, essential services such as home visits for terminal patients, integrated home care, and emergency continuity services (including the 116117 non-urgent care number) are guaranteed to remain operational.
