KFOR mission: Major General Roberto Vergori assumes command in Kosovo

Major General Roberto Vergori has officially assumed command of the NATO KFOR mission in Kosovo, succeeding Major General Özkan Ulutaş. The handover ceremony, held at the KFOR headquarters in Pristina, was presided over by Admiral George M. Wikoff, Commander of NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command Naples.

During the ceremony, Kosovo President Justina Shiroka Pula emphasized the strategic importance of the KFOR partnership for Kosovo’s security architecture and its Euro-Atlantic perspective. Prime Minister Albin Kurti also met with NATO officials to discuss regional security and the continued cooperation between Kosovo’s institutions and the Alliance.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, present at the event, stated that Italy remains deeply committed to Balkan stability. He highlighted the possibility of installing defensive radar systems in the region to protect both Balkan nations and Italy from modern threats, such as high-speed missiles.

General Vergori pledged to maintain KFOR’s commitment to all communities in Kosovo, ensuring a secure environment and freedom of movement in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244. He noted that the ongoing mission optimization process is not a withdrawal but a way to adapt to the current security situation while maintaining close coordination with the Kosovo Police and EULEX.
