Italian Government Dissolves Torre Annunziata Municipality Over Camorra Infiltration

The Italian Council of Ministers approved the dissolution of the municipality of Torre Annunziata, citing deep infiltration by the Camorra criminal organization. The decision ends the administration led by mayor Corrado Cuccurullo and appoints a prefectural commissioner, Gianfranco Tomao, to oversee a three‑year extraordinary management period.

The move follows an investigation by the Interior Ministry and statements by prosecutor Nunzio Fragliasso after the demolition of Palazzo Fienga, a former stronghold of the Gionta clan. Fragliasso warned of “excessive continuity with organized crime” and “inertia and illegality” within the local government. Similar dissolution measures were applied to the nearby town of Sarno.

Under the decree, the two municipalities will be administered by extraordinary commissions for at least 18 months, potentially extending up to four years, with new elections postponed until the end of the commissioner’s term. The action aims to restore legal governance and rebuild public trust after a history of mafia‑related disruptions.
