Italian government faces division over Ukraine support

A political rift has emerged within Italy’s governing coalition regarding continued support for Ukraine. Following his reconfirmation as leader of the Lega party, Matteo Salvini has signaled his intention to press the government to halt financial aid to Kyiv, citing corruption scandals in Ukraine and arguing that further weapons will not end the conflict.

In response, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has maintained that Italy’s policy toward Ukraine remains unchanged. Crosetto noted that the current direction for military transfers is already established by state decrees effective through the end of the year. He dismissed the notion of stopping assistance based on the conduct of specific individuals, emphasizing the necessity of protecting civilians affected by the war.
