Italian government seeks bank contributions for 2027 budget
The Italian government is discussing potential voluntary contributions from banks, insurance companies, and energy firms to fund the 2027 budget maneuver. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti indicated that those with the capacity to contribute will be called upon, though specific amounts have not yet been finalized.
There are differing views within the government regarding the scale of these contributions. Minister Giorgetti is considering an initial hypothesis of between 2 and 3 billion euros. However, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has suggested a more ambitious target of at least 5 billion euros, noting that banking profits are expected to reach approximately 50 billion euros this year.
Salvini emphasized that these contributions should be spontaneous and agreed upon, rather than forced through aggressive legislative intervention. Potential mechanisms under study include adjustments related to deferred tax assets (DTA), goodwill, and the valuation of financial instruments under IFRS 9 standards.
