Italian Green Party Deputy Angelo Bonelli Calls for Tax on Oil Companies' Extra Profits

Deputy Angelo Bonelli of the Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra criticised the Italian government's reliance on mobile fuel taxes to fund the high‑cost fuel decree, arguing that the burden falls on consumers while oil firms reap record margins. Bonelli compared Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s approach to the “Sheriff of Nottingham,” saying the government “presents the bill to Italians instead of charging the profiteers.”

He proposed an extraordinary levy on the excess profits of oil companies, estimating that the reduction in fuel accises since March 2026 has already cost the state nearly €2 billion in lost revenue. Bonelli also called for accelerated electrification and renewable‑energy development to reduce Italy’s dependence on oil and gas.
