Italian health authorities address declining breastfeeding rates

The Italian Society of Neonatology (SIN) has highlighted a progressive decline in exclusive breastfeeding rates in Italy. While 71% of healthy, full-term newborns begin breastfeeding exclusively, this figure drops to 48% by the second or third month and further decreases to 39% between the fourth and fifth months.

Data reveals significant regional disparities, with higher adherence rates in northern and central Italy compared to southern and island regions. To address these gaps, the SIN introduced the PAA Project in 2023 to standardize procedures in obstetrics and neonatology departments. Currently, 115 healthcare facilities have joined the initiative, with 65 receiving official “Birth Point for Breastfeeding” certification by ensuring practices such as prolonged rooming-in and immediate skin-to-skin contact.

In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, themed “Breastfeeding for a sustainable start to life,” local initiatives are also taking place. In Piacenza, an informational event at the Galleria del Sole will feature workshops, quizzes, and a symbolic flash mob to support future parents and emphasize the importance of a healthcare network that promotes maternal and infant well-being.
