Italian health sector boosts innovation with clinical engineering focus and upgraded pharmacy labs

Filippo Molinari, professor of bioengineering at the Politecnico di Torino, highlighted the crucial role of clinical engineers in linking emerging technologies—such as artificial intelligence, robotics, sensors and optical techniques—to medical practice. He stressed the need for specialized training to enable engineers to act as bridges between technology developers and clinicians, ensuring new tools are assessed for real clinical value.

In Reggio Emilia, the regional health authority (AUSL) completed a major renovation of its pharmacy laboratories, installing state‑of‑the‑art cleanrooms that meet ISO 14644 and EU‑GMP standards. The upgrade supports the preparation of advanced therapies, including ATMPs and genetically modified microorganisms, and enhances patient safety through fully traceable, personalized dosing and rigorous contamination controls.
