Italian healthcare reports show RSV decline and scabies treatment shifts

In the Brianza region of Italy, healthcare authorities report a 75% decrease in infant hospitalizations caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This decline is attributed to a successful vaccination campaign utilizing the monoclonal antibody NirseviMab. Data from Asst Brianza shows hospitalizations dropped from 265 during the 2023-2024 epidemic period to 67 in the most recent winter, supported by an immunization coverage rate of 91.6%.

Separately, pediatric specialists at the Meyer Children's Hospital in Florence are addressing a rise in scabies cases, with over 100 pediatric diagnoses annually. Research published in ‘The Lancet Infectious Diseases’ suggests that traditional permetrine-based treatments are becoming less effective against the mite. Consequently, medical teams are shifting toward sulfur-based preparations, which have been integrated into the 2025 pediatric scabies treatment guidelines.
