Italian heritage sites in Sorrento and Ostia confront litter and embankment issues

In Sorrento, the ancient Villa Romana di Agrippa Postumo (the Ninfeo) was marred by waste after a new pedestrian access to the beach opened. Visitors left bottles, cans, pizza boxes and other litter, and a couple reportedly ate on the historic rocks and abandoned their food waste, prompting concerns over the protection of the Roman archaeological site.

In Ostia Antica, residents have questioned the decision to use material recovered from canal cleaning to raise the embankment along Via Giovanni Becatti. They seek clarification on the technical assessments behind the choice, fearing dust formation and potential stability issues, and have asked authorities for further investigation.
