Italian high-speed rail workers protest unpaid wages

Labor disputes have emerged regarding the construction of the Salerno-Reggio Calabria and Irpinia high-speed railway lines in Italy, specifically involving foreign workers. In Salerno, Egyptian workers held a protest at the Prefecture to demand unpaid wages and the resumption of work. A worker representative reported severe conditions, including shifts lasting up to 20 consecutive hours.

In a related matter in Avellino, authorities met to address the situation of 15 foreign workers employed by the company Areco at the Irpinia high-speed rail site. These workers, many of whom are international protection seekers, are owed wages from August and September, as well as severance related to dismissal procedures. The Consorzio Hirpinia Alta Velocità has expressed willingness to provide substitute payments to ensure the workers receive their dues and can leave the construction site base camp.
