Italian Hospital Retrieves Multiple Organs from 47-Year-Old Donor After Traumatic Brain Injury

A 47‑year‑old patient who suffered a severe cranial trauma was declared brain‑dead at the Intensive Care Unit of the I.R.C.C.S. Neuromed hospital in Pozzilli, Italy. Following consent from the family, a multi‑organ retrieval was carried out, harvesting the heart, liver, both kidneys and corneas.

The procedure was coordinated by the Centro di Coordinamento Trapianti Abruzzo‑Molise and involved surgeons from Naples, Rome and L’Aquila. The organs were then transported to recipient hospitals for transplantation, offering new chances of life for transplant patients.

Neuromed’s medical director, Dr. Fulvio Aloj, highlighted the act as a “gesture of great courage and altruism,” emphasizing the support provided to the donor’s family and the professional teamwork that made the donation possible.
