Italian hospitals expand robotic surgery capabilities
Italian healthcare facilities are reporting significant growth and expansion in robotic surgery capabilities.
In Lombardy, the ASST Ovest Milanese reported that the Legnano Hospital completed 322 robotic procedures within one year of introducing the technology. This figure exceeds the annual target of 250 set by the Lombardy Region. The procedures, performed by general surgery and urology teams, included oncological operations on the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, colon, and rectum, as well as treatments for benign conditions like hernias.
In Rome, the San Camillo Forlanini Hospital has completed the installation and testing of its second robotic surgical system. This €3 million investment, funded by the Ministry of Health, follows a period of high demand for the hospital's first unit. The first robot saw a steady increase in activity, with projections suggesting 520 interventions by the end of the current year. The addition of the second unit aims to increase the volume of minimally invasive procedures and allow for more complex operations, offering patients benefits such as reduced post-operative pain and faster recovery times.
