Italian hospitals expand use of surgical robots for complex operations
Italian medical centres have increasingly deployed robotic platforms to perform a range of complex procedures. At the IRCCS “Saverio de Bellis” in Castellana Grotte surgeons used a robot to resect a carcinoma of the cardias in a patient who previously underwent a Mini Gastric Bypass – a surgery described as the first of its kind worldwide. The robot provides three‑dimensional high‑definition vision and precise instrument control, enabling safe removal of the tumour and reconstruction of the gastrointestinal tract.
In Avezzano, a new orthopaedic robot was introduced to implant hip and knee prostheses, offering higher placement accuracy and faster postoperative recovery for patients, including those from other regions. The Chioggia urology team performed a radical prostatectomy with the Da Vinci robot, transferring the patient to a nearby hospital for the procedure and discharging him the following day. At Vizzolo Predabissi the robotic system has been used for at least 160 general surgeries since the start of 2026, including two adrenalectomies and a combined adrenalectomy‑cholecystectomy, demonstrating the technology’s expanding role in endocrine and oncologic surgery. Across these hospitals the robotics programme aims to minimise invasiveness, reduce pain and blood loss, and shorten hospital stays while maintaining high surgical precision.
