Italian hospitals rank among world's best in specialized categories
Four Italian medical institutions have been recognized in the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2026 rankings, published by Newsweek and Statista. The rankings place Italian facilities among the top ten globally in several specific medical disciplines.
Key achievements include: • Policlinico Gemelli (Rome): Ranked third globally in obstetrics and gynecology. • Bambino Gesù (Rome): Ranked fourth globally in pediatrics. • Istituto Neurologico Carlo Besta (Milan): Ranked eighth in neurology and eleventh in neurosurgery. • Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli (Bologna): Ranked ninth in orthopedics.
In total, 42 Italian hospitals appeared across 13 analyzed specialties. Other notable mentions include the IEO in Milan (fourteenth in oncology) and the Centro Cardiologico Monzino (seventeenth in cardiology). The ranking methodology is based primarily on healthcare professional surveys (83.5%), followed by quality accreditations (10%) and patient outcomes (6.5%).
While the rankings highlight technological and clinical excellence, local discussions in Rome emphasize that such international prestige must translate into practical benefits for citizens, such as reduced waiting lists and improved digital accessibility for patient data.
