Italian hospitals report advanced surgical successes

Medical teams in Italy have reported significant surgical achievements involving advanced planning and specialized techniques.

At the Policlinico di Bari, the Maxillofacial Surgery team, led by Professor Chiara Copelli, successfully treated a 28-year-old man following a severe road accident. Using CT scans from Andria, the team performed virtual reconstructions of complex facial fractures to plan the surgery before the patient arrived. This method allowed for precise stabilization of the jaw and facial structures. The unit has treated over 180 facial trauma cases since June, noting an increase in incidents due to summer activities.

Separately, at the Chivasso Hospital, a multidisciplinary team successfully performed a laparoscopic gallbladder removal on a patient with severe cardio-respiratory issues. Unlike standard procedures that require general anesthesia and intubation, surgeons Clemente Ronchetta and Paolo Chiaro, alongside anesthesiologist Paolo Pais, utilized a technique that allowed the patient to maintain spontaneous breathing throughout the operation. This personalized approach minimized the risks typically associated with traditional anesthesia for high-risk patients.
