Italy healthcare: New dialysis unit and organ donation milestones

Various regional healthcare developments and humanitarian efforts are being reported across Italy. In Mondovì, a new dialysis unit at the Regina Montis Regalis hospital is scheduled for inauguration on October 12. The project was funded by Intesa Sanpaolo and Fondazione CRC, though officials noted challenges regarding human resources and staffing logistics.

Organ donation remains a significant focus. In Fermo, a donor provided a liver and corneas, while Brindisi recorded its sixth multi-organ donation of 2026. In Cesena, the Bufalini Hospital celebrated ten years of managing ‘heart-stop’ donations via its Ecmo Team, a model now utilized across Italy. Additionally, Messina is launching the ‘DARte Messina’ educational path to promote donation culture through art and science.

In Basilicata, regional health reforms are underway to strengthen territorial medicine, supported by a 27 million euro hiring plan to recruit 400 professionals. Meanwhile, in Oristano, health officials have issued an appeal for blood donations throughout October to meet local needs.
