Italian hospitals report surgical milestones and robotic advancements

Medical facilities in Italy have reported significant surgical milestones. At the Grande Ospedale Metropolitano in Reggio Calabria, multidisciplinary teams successfully completed two complex orthopedic procedures involving elderly patients. One case involved a 102-year-old patient treated for a periprosthetic femoral fracture, who was able to return home five days after surgery. A second case involved an octogenarian patient with severe polytrauma, including an acetabular fracture and pulmonary embolism, who underwent successful hip arthroplasty.

In Matera, the Madonna delle Grazie hospital reached a milestone of 100 robotic surgeries performed within six months using the Hugo Ras system. The technology has been utilized across general surgery, urology, and gynecology. Following an initial training phase, the hospital plans to expand the use of the robotic platform to more complex procedures, such as radical cystectomy and colorectal surgery, aiming to provide increased precision and minimally invasive options for patients.
