Italian hospitals use minimally invasive techniques for elderly surgeries

An 87‑year‑old patient with an obstructing right‑colon lesion underwent a laparoscopic resection at the Giuseppe Tatarella Hospital in Cerignola. The operation was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Giovanni Bisceglia and involved coordinated care from internal medicine, anesthesia, and cardiology units. The patient was discharged after a successful postoperative course.

At the hospital in Vizzolo Predabissi, two patients over 70 received video‑laparoscopic cholecystectomy and bilateral inguinal hernia repair using hypnotic sedation combined with spinal anesthesia (Awareness Surgery). The procedures were overseen by anesthesiologists Dr. Caterina Valcarenghi and Dr. Benedetta Basta and surgeons Dr. Carmelo Magistro and Dr. Giovanni Marino. Both patients were discharged the next day without neurological complications and reported high satisfaction with the approach.
