Italian infrastructure inadequacy costs economy 50 billion euros annually
During the Cnpr forum in Naples, Italian officials highlighted the severe economic and social costs of inadequate infrastructure. Estimates suggest that network congestion results in annual losses of at least 50 billion euros due to wasted time, pollution, and reduced productivity for both families and businesses.
Senator Antonio Misiani noted that the most significant impacts are felt in internal areas, Southern Italy, and urban peripheries where connectivity is weakest. While the Pnrr provides significant funding for sustainable mobility, Misiani emphasized the need for long-term, decadal planning and guaranteed resources to maintain momentum after the plan concludes. The priority remains strengthening local public transport, including trams, subways, local railways, and electric buses.
Gianfranco Rotondi also addressed shifting demographic and labor trends, noting a movement away from concentrated metropolitan areas toward environments that offer a better balance between work and private life, citing changes in urban populations as a relevant example.
