Italian institutions launch AI initiatives for SMEs and waste management

Various Italian institutions are launching initiatives to integrate artificial intelligence into local industry and public services.

In Cosenza, the Chamber of Commerce and the University of Calabria have introduced ‘AI LAB 2026’. Supported by 75,000 euros, the program aims to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) adopt AI technologies. The initiative offers two phases: specialized support through personalized AI adoption plans developed with university experts, and non-repayable grants of up to 2,500 euros to cover direct investments in technological solutions.

In Verona, the University of Verona and the waste management company Amia Verona are collaborating on a project to optimize waste collection services. Funded by 78,060 euros from the Research & Development 2026 call by Fondazione Cariverona and Fondazione Caritro, the project, titled ‘Diamante’, will use AI to process data from GPS tracking, fill sensors, and controlled-access containers. The goal is to transform operational data into actionable knowledge to improve collection routes, resource management, and environmental performance.
