Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi rejects EU role rumors and outlines post‑government plans

Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi told Myrta Merlino that reports of his appointment to a European Union role are "pure fantasy" and that such positions are decided outside the competence of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni or himself. He said his friendship with League leader Matteo Salvini remains intact and noted Salvini’s statement that he does not intend to return to the Viminale now but would consider it after a future election victory.

Piantedosi added that after the current government he may return to the prefectural corps, possibly taking up a rural estate in Irpinia. He discussed immigration, emphasizing a sustainable and regulated approach, and referenced the Pope’s call to openness toward migrants. He also recounted recent visits to Somalia and Kenya, stressing the importance of developing ties with those countries for Italy’s economic interests.
