Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedzi rules out European post and plans future role

In an interview with Myrta Merlino, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedzi said rumours that he will take a European Union position are “absolute pure fantasy,” noting that such appointments are decided outside the competence of the prime minister or himself. He also dismissed any imminent move from the Viminale, the ministry’s headquarters.

Piantedzi affirmed his friendship with fellow politician Matteo Salvini, adding that Salvini does not plan to return to the Viminale now but hopes to do so if their coalition wins future elections. The minister said that after the current government he may re‑enter the prefectural corps and, at worst, take up a farm in Irpinia.

He underscored the strategic importance of the Mediterranean and Pantelleria, referenced Pope Leo XIV’s call to welcome migrants in a sustainable, regulated manner, and defended the government’s non‑prejudiced stance on migration. Piantedzi also cited recent visits to Somalia and Kenya, stressing the need to build relations that benefit Italy’s economy.
