Italian Interior Minister Piantedosi dismisses EU role rumor, says he'll leave Viminale

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi told an interview that reports of him taking a European Union post are "pure fantasy" because such appointments are decided by criteria beyond the competence of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni or himself. He also said he may leave the Viminale at the end of the current government, returning to a prefect position or spending time on a country estate in Irpinia. Piantedosi addressed speculation about Matteo Salvini’s possible return to the ministry, reaffirming their friendship but noting Salvini does not plan to return now. He commented on the political positioning of Gianluigi Vannacci, stating a future government including Vannacci would be difficult. On immigration, Piantedosi highlighted a 54% drop in irregular arrivals this year, describing the trend as progressive and under control. He also mentioned Italy’s advanced plan to combat synthetic drugs, stressing vigilance despite lower domestic impact compared with other countries. The minister referenced recent visits to Somalia and Kenya, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties with those nations for Italy’s economic interests.
