Italian journalism confronts leadership dispute and AI safety concerns

On 10 July 2026 the editorial assembly of Italy’s daily La Repubblica voted a motion of no confidence in director Mario Orfeo, recording 178 votes in favour, 32 against and 30 abstentions. The assembly declared a “palese conflitto di interessi” between Orfeo’s role and his upcoming appointment at a competing publishing group and called for the immediate nomination of a new director.

At the same time, the Italian journalists’ union warned that the launch of the Chinese news platform WeNews in Bolzano and Trento raises serious risks. Union leaders highlighted the platform’s reliance on artificial‑intelligence editorial agents, arguing that AI must remain under human control to protect democratic debate and national security. They urged stricter regulation of AI in media, referencing Italy’s recent AI legislation and the EU AI Act.

Both developments underscore growing tensions within Italy’s media sector over editorial independence and the impact of emerging technologies.
