Italian labor market shows 565,000 projected hires for September

Italian businesses are projected to make 565,000 new hires in September, with total hires expected to reach 1.5 million for the September-November quarter. According to the Excelsior monitoring system by Unioncamere and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, the service sector accounts for 65.6% of these hires, followed by industry and construction at 26.5%. While monthly demand has seen a slight year-on-year decrease of 0.6%, the labor market maintains high personnel needs and significant selectivity, with a 44% difficulty rate in finding suitable candidates.

In the central Italian regions of Abruzzo, Marche, and Umbria, a report by the Politecnica delle Marche highlights economic challenges. Between 2010 and 2023, business registrations in these areas, particularly in internal zones, fell by two-thirds. Furthermore, employment growth in industry and services for the 2019-2024 period reached only 5.8%, trailing the national average of 8.1%. Experts suggest the need for a coordinated industrial policy to transform these territories into a cohesive ‘super region’ focusing on automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and digital technologies.
