Italian lakes face tension between tourism growth and environmental fragility

Italian lakes, including Garda, Como, Maggiore, and Trasimeno, are experiencing a complex tension between economic prosperity and environmental vulnerability. While these regions have evolved into significant economic platforms driven by tourism, real estate, and agriculture, they face increasing threats from pollution, water scarcity, and climate change.

Lake Garda has emerged as a major European destination, with projected tourist arrivals nearing 28 million in 2025. This massive influx supports a wide range of services, from hospitality to logistics. However, unlike the sea, lakes are closed or semi-closed systems, making them highly susceptible to the accumulation of microplastics, nutrients, and pollutants.

In the Trasimeno region, the landscape is marked by both environmental and historical significance. Local history is deeply tied to the Second Punic War and the battles of Hannibal, with various local place names and landmarks reflecting these ancient events. Additionally, the area holds memorials dedicated to the victims of Nazi-fascist atrocities, highlighting the layers of historical memory present in the lakeside villages.
