Italy pushes for permanent daylight saving time

Italian lawmakers and advocacy groups are pushing for the abolition of seasonal time changes in favor of permanent daylight saving time. On October 15, 2026, a resolution was presented to the Italian Chamber of Deputies following a parliamentary inquiry conducted by the X Commission on Productive Activities, Trade, and Tourism.

The resolution, spearheaded by Deputy Andrea Barabotti, urges the Italian government to engage with the European Union to resume and conclude negotiations regarding the suppression of seasonal clock changes. The initiative seeks to have Italy promote the permanent adoption of daylight saving time within European institutions and potentially participate in EU-wide experimentation of a single year-round time.

The proposal is supported by Consumerismo No Profit and the Società Italiana di Medicina Ambientale (SIMA), whose online petition has gathered nearly 360,000 signatures. While there is broad consensus among medical professionals, unions, and trade associations that the biannual clock change causes health and organizational issues, debate continues regarding whether to adopt permanent daylight saving time or permanent standard time. Despite these efforts, the current schedule remains in place, with the transition to standard time scheduled for the night of October 24-25, 2026.
