Italian leaders warn of educational emergency and social inequality
Italian religious and sociological leaders have raised concerns regarding an “educational emergency” that threatens social cohesion. During the closing of the Permanent Council of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Giuseppe Baturi, Secretary General of the Cei, warned that difficulties in transmitting values between generations and continuous episodes of violence put the future of society at risk.
Baturi emphasized the need for schools to serve as inclusive spaces for humanization and self-discovery, calling for a collective responsibility among adults to support education. He specifically addressed educational inequalities, stating it is unacceptable for educational outcomes to vary based on geographic location or the divide between urban and rural areas.
Complementing these concerns, a report by the International Center for Family Studies (Cisf) highlights a perceived decline in the school system's ability to act as a tool for social mobility. According to the report, nearly half of those surveyed believe schools fail to reduce initial inequalities, with some suggesting the system may even exacerbate them. This coincides with government actions, such as a decree-law introducing caps on the presence of foreign students in classrooms.
