Italian left-wing coalition faces leadership and policy disputes

The broad left-wing coalition in Italy, known as ‘campo largo’, faces internal challenges regarding leadership and a unified political program. While the alliance is united by its opposition to the right-wing government, it lacks a cohesive strategy to address national issues such as the economy, security, borders, and family policy.

Central to the tension is the struggle for influence between Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, and Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement. Although polling has suggested a lead for Conte in the contest for leadership, the coalition remains divided over how to select a leader and how to structure a viable alternative to the center-right. The current alignment is characterized more by shared anti-fascist rhetoric than by a concrete policy framework.
