Italian lifeguards honor Fabrizio Valente following rescue tragedy

Lifeguards across various Italian coastal regions participated in a national tribute to honor Fabrizio Valente, a 62-year-old lifeguard who died while attempting to rescue a tourist in Andora, Liguria.

During the commemoration, which coincided with the National Day of Italian Beachgoers, rescuers used whistles and raised oars toward the sky from their rescue boats to show respect. The tribute served as both a memorial for Valente and a reminder of the importance of maritime safety, specifically regarding the observance of red flags indicating dangerous sea conditions.

Valente lost his life on August 25 while intervening to help a couple caught in strong currents near a pier. While his colleague successfully assisted the woman, Valente was unable to bring the man to shore safely. The cause of his collapse during the rescue attempt remains under investigation.
