Italian local authorities crack down on illegal waste dumping

Local authorities in Italy are intensifying efforts to combat illegal waste disposal and urban decay through targeted enforcement operations.

In Catania, the Local Police Environmental Task Force conducted an extensive overnight operation involving ten patrols. Using both uniformed officers and plainclothes surveillance with undercover vehicles, agents monitored various areas including the historic center and commercial districts. The operation resulted in 110 citations for violations such as improper waste sorting, abandoning bags on public ground, and failing to adhere to scheduled collection times.

In Trecate, a coordinated effort between the Local Police and environmental inspectors from the Consorzio Bacino Basso Novarese targeted illegal dumping. Following an inspection of abandoned materials in via Cairoli, authorities issued seven citations with fines ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 euros. Local officials emphasized a ‘zero tolerance’ policy, combining punitive measures with municipal cleaning efforts to restore affected areas.
