Italian local governance faces criticism over cemetery fees and tourism policy
In Notaresco, opposition councilor Antonina Speziale has denounced significant increases in cemetery service fees. The hikes, which took effect in November 2025, include a 140% increase for votive lights and a 232% increase for remains transfer. Speziale alleges these costs were not approved through a dedicated cemetery service resolution but were instead included in a settlement regarding a 150,000 euro debt related to ossuary reclamation works.
Separately, in Puglia, the Fratelli d’Italia regional group has criticized the local government for the short duration of the official beach season. According to councilor Nicola Gatta, the 2026 season lasted only three and a half months, from May 23 to September 13. The opposition argues this is significantly shorter than seasons in regions like Tuscany, Lazio, and Liguria, and claims the early end to the official season creates bureaucratic issues by removing mandatory lifeguard and assistance services too soon.
