Italian local politics: Term limit debates in Cassino and election maneuvering in Erice

In Cassino, political discussions are intensifying regarding potential changes to national legislation concerning term limits for mayors in municipalities with more than 15,000 inhabitants. Currently, a two-term limit is in effect for such cities. If Parliament approves a third consecutive mandate, Mayor Enzo Salera, who was re-elected in 2024, could potentially run again in 2029. This possibility is reportedly influencing local political ambitions and succession planning within the center-left coalition.

Meanwhile, in Erice, preparations for the 2027 municipal elections are beginning to take shape. The center-right coalition faces internal fragmentation, with Livio Marrocco launching a candidacy while other factions, such as the Amo Erice movement, signal a lack of support. On the center-left side, the Democratic Party (PD) has called for primaries, with Vice Mayor Paolo Genco and Councilor Carmela Daidone emerging as key figures in the race to maintain coalition unity.
