Associazione Nazionale Magistrati criticizes government over Turin court inspection

The National Association of Magistrates (ANM) has criticized the Italian government following a controversial judicial decision in Turin. The dispute arose after a judge for preliminary investigations (GIP) granted a 42-year-old Bangladeshi national a precautionary measure of only a signature requirement rather than imprisonment, despite accusations of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl and another woman in a minimarket.

In response to the public outcry, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio ordered an inspection of the Turin Court. The ANM, led by President Giuseppe Tango, condemned the government's reaction as “unorthodox” and described political attacks against the judiciary as “disorganized.” The association argued that such interventions risk undermining judicial autonomy and that inspectors should not be used to evaluate the merits of individual legal proceedings.

The Turin Prosecutor's Office has decided to appeal the judge's decision to the Review Court, arguing that the lighter measure is inadequate given the gravity of the alleged crimes and the risk of recidivism.
