Italian man Valerio Gentile dies after acid attack and investigation

Valerio Gentile, a 37‑year‑old resident of the Rome area, was severely injured on 9 July when his 29‑year‑old ex‑girlfriend threw a bottle of acid at him in Pomezia. The attack left permanent burns on his face and neck, and he posted distressing messages on Facebook about his condition.

On the night of 31 July–1 August, Gentile was found in a confused state in Marino, was taken to the Castelli Hospital in Ariccia, and died shortly after admission. The Velletri prosecutor opened an investigation, ordering an autopsy and toxicology tests. Investigators are considering a possible cocaine overdose as a factor, but no suspects have been identified. The ex‑girlfriend was arrested on 22 July on charges of causing permanent disfigurement, and the case remains under police scrutiny.
